Why do personality tests intrigue us so?
People are always looking for venues for self-awareness, explains Steven Meyers, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Ill. You could introspect and think about yourself, however that has its limits, he says. When we take these self-assessments it gives us another mirror inward.
Personality tests let us compare ourselves with others with some sense of scientific backing. You might be familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or the Color Temperaments. My new favorite is the Enneagram.
What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram refers to the nine different types or styles, with each representing a worldview and archetype that resonates with the way people think, feel and act in relation to the world, others and themselves.
It is much more than a personality profile that offers insight into core personality traits, as it delves deeper into the core motivations, defence mechanisms and fears that often lie in the unconscious layers of our personality structure.
Everyone emerges from childhood with one of the nine types dominating their personality, with inborn temperament and other pre-natal factors being the main determinants of our type. This is one area where most all of the major Enneagram authors agree—we are born with a dominant type.
Subsequently, this inborn orientation largely determines the ways in which we learn to adapt to our early childhood environment. It also seems to lead to certain unconscious orientations toward our parental figures, but why this is so, we still do not know.
In any case, by the time children are four or five years old, their consciousness has developed sufficiently to have a separate sense of self. Although their identity is still very fluid, at this age children begin to establish themselves and find ways of fitting into the world on their own.
Take the Enneagram Profile Test
Whether your personal challenge is self-discipline, being less tough on yourself, breaking a procrastination habit, negative thinking, low self-confidence or another personal challenge, the Enneagram offers a fresh perspective and gives you powerful tools to break out of automatic patterns, habits and non-awareness.
By understanding the deepest levels of your strengths, motivations, internal conflicts, anxieties and self-limiting beliefs, our reports assess and reflect personal, social and professional elements to unlock your self-awareness. The information is then presented in a simple, empowering way for you to interpret and apply in your own life.
